Santiago Rusiñol i Prats, pintor, poeta y dramaturgo español nacido en 1861.

On February 23 is the birthday of

Antonio Alice, Argentine painter born in Buenos Aires in 1886 and died in 1943. At 12 he began his studies at the workshop of Decoroso Bonifanti where he studied for six years. In 1904 he presented to the National Contest and gets the Rome Prize, a scholarship enabled him to study in Europe.
He devoted himself to historical painting and portraiture, with whom he won numerous awards.

George Frederic Watts, OM, RA (1817 - 1904) was a popular English Victorian painter and sculptor associated with the Symbolist movement. Watts became famous in his lifetime for his allegorical works, such as Hope and Love and Life. These paintings were intended to form part of an epic symbolic cycle called the "House of Life", in which the emotions and aspirations of life would all be represented in a universal symbolic language.
He showed artistic promise very early, learning sculpture from the age of 10 with William Behnes and then enrolling as a student at the Royal Academy at the age of 18. He also began his portraiture career, receiving patronage from his close contemporary Alexander Constantine Ionides, with whom he later came to be a close friend.
He came to the public eye with a drawing entitled Caractacus, which was entered for a competition to design murals for the new Houses of Parliament at Westminster in 1843. Watts won a first prize.

Kazimir Severinovich Malevich (Казимир Северинович Малевич), Russian painter and art theoretician. He was a pioneer of geometric abstract art and the originator of the avant-garde, Suprematist movement.
From 1896 to 1904 Kazimir Malevich lived in Kursk. In 1904, after the death of his father, he moved to Moscow. He studied at the Moscow School of Painting, Sculpture, and Architecture from 1904 to 1910 and in the studio of Fedor Rerberg. In 1911 he participated in the second exhibition of the group, Soyuz Molodyozhi (Union of Youth) in St. Petersburg, together with Vladimir Tatlin and, in 1912, the group held its third exhibition, which included works by Aleksandra Ekster, Tatlin, and others. In the same year he participated in an exhibition by the collective, Donkey's Tail in Moscow.
In 1915, Malevich laid down the foundations of Suprematism when he published his manifesto, From Cubism to Suprematism. In 1915–1916 he worked with other Suprematist artists in a peasant/artisan co-operative in Skoptsi and Verbovka village. In 1916–1917 he participated in exhibitions of the Jack of Diamonds group in Moscow together with Nathan Altman, David Burliuk, Aleksandra Ekster and others. Famous examples of his Suprematist works include, Black Square (1915) and White On White (1918).

On February 24 is the birthday of

Winslow Homer, (1836 - 1910), American landscape painter and printmaker, best known for his marine subjects. He is considered one of the foremost painters in 19th-century America and a preeminent figure in American art.
Largely self-taught, Homer's career as an illustrator lasted nearly twenty years. He contributed illustrations of Boston life and rural New England life to magazines such as Ballou's Pictorial and Harper's Weekly
He subsequently took up oil painting. He also worked extensively in watercolor, creating a fluid and prolific oeuvre, primarily chronicling his working vacations.

Charles Le Brun, French painter and art theorist born in 1619, one of the dominant artists in seventeenth-century France. At fifteen and received commissions from Cardinal Richelieu. Between 1650 and 1660 takes his stylistic maturity with paintings of elegant classicist style and most notably his work at Versailles. He became the chief interpreter of the splendor of the France of Louis XIV, for which he was despised by the romantic painters of the nineteenth century and little known to the general public. In his posthumous treatise "Méthode pour apprendre à dessiner les passions" (1698) promoted the expression of emotions in painting and greatly influenced art theory for the next two centuries.

On February 25 is the birthday of

Pierre-Auguste Renoir, one of the most famous French painters born in 1841, which moved through impressionism and gradually removed to focus on painting female bodies in landscapes, often inspired by classical Renaissance and Baroque paintings.
Renoir offers a more sensual interpretation of impressionism that does not usually affect the harshest of life, as it sometimes did Manet or Van Gogh. In his creations shows the joy of life, with characters having fun in a friendly nature. He painted over more than sixty years, passing away in 1919.

Santiago Rusiñol i Prats, Spanish painter, poet and playwright born in 1861. He was one of the leaders of the Catalan modernisme movement.
Despite the fact that he was the heir to the family's lucrative operations, by the time he was a teenager Rusiñol already showed a strong interest in painting and travel.
His training as painter started at Centro de Acuarelistas de Barcelona under the direction of Tomás Moragas. Like so many artists of the day, he travelled to Paris in 1889, living in Montmartre with Ramon Casas and Ignacio Zuloaga.
Much of his work in Paris belonged to the Symbolism painting style. While there, he also attended the Gervex Academy, where he discovered his love for modernism. When back in Barcelona, he was a frequent client of the café Els Quatre Gats, noted for its association with modernisme and the young Pablo Picasso. He Died in 1931

On February 26 is the birthday of

Oldřich Kulhánek, painter, graphic designer, illustrator and Czech pedagogue, born in 1940 and died on January 28, 2013.
He studied at the Academy of Arts, Architecture and Design in Prague. He was arrested in 1971 by the StB (Czech secret police). Between 1968 and 1971 had created a graph cycle entitled "A distorted portrait of Joseph Stalin, pierced by red five-pointed stars or happy faces of socialist workers who become a face horrible." It was identified as "ideologically dangerous" and doomed to destruction. Kulhanek spent a month in jail and was regularly interrogated for two years. Its publication was banned. In the 80s he created series of lithographs inspired by the human body. His is the design of Czech banknotes.

Honoré Daumier, French printmaker, caricaturist, painter, and sculptor born in 1808, whose many works offer commentary on social and political life in France in the 19th century.
Daumier produced over 500 paintings, 4000 lithographs, 1000 wood engravings, 1000 drawings and 100 sculptures. A prolific draftsman, he was perhaps best known for his caricatures of political figures and satires on the behavior of his countrymen, although posthumously the value of his painting has also been recognized.
Having mastered the techniques of lithography, Daumier began his artistic career by producing plates for music publishers, and illustrations for advertisements. This was followed by anonymous work for publishers, in which he emulated the style of Charlet and displayed considerable enthusiasm for the Napoleonic legend. Daumier was almost blind by 1873. He died in 1879.

On February 27 is the birthday of

Joaquin Sorolla y Bastida, painter and graphic artist born in Valencia in 1863. In 1883 he painted the canvas "Study of Christ" recently discovered, where the influence of the crucified Christ of Velázquez is observed. Thus begins his "Realistic phase". On his return from Italy in 1889, he settled with his wife in Madrid, and in just five years achieved some fame and prestige as a painter. In 1894 he traveled again to Paris, where he developed a style of painting called "Luminism" which would be characteristic of his work thereafter. With "Sad Legacy" - painting of social criticism - received, in 1900, the Grand Prix at the international competition in Paris. He died in 1923.

Marino Marini, Italian sculptor born in 1901.
He attended the Accademia di Belle Arti in Florence in 1917. Although he never abandoned painting, Marini devoted himself primarily to sculpture from about 1922. From this time his work was influenced by Etruscan art and the sculpture of Arturo Martini. Marini succeeded Martini as professor at the Scuola d’Arte di Villa Reale in Monza, near Milan, in 1929, a position he retained until 1940.
In 1943, he went into exile in Switzerland, exhibiting in Basel, Bern, and Zurich. In 1946, the artist settled permanently in Milan.
Marini is particularly famous for his series of stylised equestrian statues, which feature a man with outstretched arms on a horse. He died in 1980.

On February 28 is the birthday of

José Gutiérrez Solana, Spanish expressionist painter, engraver and writer born in 1886. His first exhibition was in Paris (1928), which proved a failure. In another that went Alfonso XIII, his paintings were hung behind a door so no trouble the monarch. His paintings reflects like Darius Regoyos and Ignacio Zuloaga, a subjective, pessimistic and degraded similar to the 98 Generation Spain vision. In 1936, when the Civil War began, Solana is known and recognized in and outside Spain. He moved to Valencia and then to Paris until 1939 when he returned to Madrid, where he died in 1945.

Sir John Tenniel, British illustrator, graphic humourist and political cartoonist born in 1820, whose work was prominent during the second half of England’s 19th century. Tenniel is considered important to the study of that period’s social, literary, and art histories. Tenniel was knighted by Victoria for his artistic achievements in 1893.
Tenniel is most noted for two major accomplishments: he was the principal political cartoonist for England’s Punch magazine for over 50 years, and he was the artist who illustrated Lewis Carroll’s Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland and Through the Looking-Glass.
In 1865 Tenniel, after considerable talks with Carroll, illustrated the first edition of Alice's Adventures in Wonderland.
The first print run of 2,000 was shelved because Tenniel objected to the print quality. A new edition (the first edition was resold in America), released in December of the same year but carrying an 1866 date, was quickly printed and became an instant best-seller, securing Tenniel's lasting fame in the process. His illustrations for both books have taken their place among the most famous literary illustrations ever made. Tenniel died in 1914.
