Aniversarios (XIV) [Mayo / May 1-3]

El 1 de Mayo es el cumple de

Jules Breton, pintor realista francés nacido en 1827. Su padre, Marie-Louis Breton, trabajaba las tierras de un rico terrateniente. El respeto a la tradición, el amor por la tierra y por su región natal se mantuvieron como la parte central de su obra durante el resto de su vida.
Estudió en Gante, Amberes y la Ecole des Beaux-Arts. Si bien sus primeros trabajos fueron sobre personajes históricos, después de 1852 se convenció de que lo suyo era pintar el mundo rural que le había impresionado en su juventud. 
Sus representaciones poéticas en un paisaje con el sol de poniente se hicieron muy populares, especialmente en Estados Unidos. En 1880, Vincent van Gogh viajo 137 km hasta Courrières para visitar a Breton, de quien era gran admirador. Fue miembro del Instituto de Francia y en 1899 fue elegido miembro de la Royal Academy. Murió en 1906.

Adelsteen Normann, pintor noruego que trabajó en Berlín, notable por sus pinturas de paisajes de su país. Normann fue el artista que invitó a Edvard Munch a Berlín, donde pintó El Grito. Se acredita a las pinturas de fiordos de Normann el que estos lugares se convirtieran en destinos turísticos más populares.
Estudió en la Kunstakademie Düsseldorf entre 1869 y 1872, y estilísticamente sus pinturas pertenecen a la Escuela de Düsseldorf. Estudió con el pintor estonio Eugen Dücker. Normann se estableció en Berlín desde 1883. Sus pinturas fueron casi siempre paisajes e invariablemente de fiordos noruegos, donde suele verse el agua combinada con pequeñas casas, barcos y laderas montañosas.

El 2 de Mayo es el cumple de

Gregorio Prieto, pintor español nacido en Valdepeñas en 1897. 
Estudió en la Escuela de Artes y Oficios y en 1915 ingresó en la Academia de Bellas Artes de San Fernando. Su primera exposición individual fue en el Ateneo de Madrid en 1919. 
Relacionado con las vanguardias europeas, fue amigo de Rafael Alberti y Luis Cernuda (con quien convivió en Londres). Conoció a Lorca (a quien retrató varias veces), Alberto Moravia, Chirico, etc. Tras sus viajes por Italia, Grecia y Egipto, su obra se centrará en la arquitectura griega y sus cuadros se pueblan de marineros e iconografía homoerótica. En 1935 se organiza una importante exposición en París donde las pinturas de Prieto se muestran al lado de otras de Pablo Picasso, Joan Miró, Juan Gris o Salvador Dalí entre otros. Murió a los 95 años.

Juan Luis Vassallo Parodi, escultor español nacido en Cádiz en 1908.
Antes de cumplir un año se trasladó a Córdoba donde su padre fue profesor en la Escuela de Artes y Oficios. Allí inició sus estudios artísticos sin tener edad para matricularse oficialmente y conoció al escultor Mateo Inurria, gran amigo de la familia.
Estudió en la Escuela Superior de Bellas Artes de San Fernando entre 1931 y 1934. Se trasladó después a Ávila como profesor de la Escuela de Artes y Oficios.
En 1936 comienza una nueva etapa andaluza al trabajar sucesivamente en las Escuelas de Artes y Oficios de Jerez de la Frontera (1936-1941) y en la Escuela Superior de Bellas Artes de Sevilla desde 1943. Dirigió este último centro desde 1952 a 1958. Murió en 1986.

Hoy, 3 de Mayo es el cumple de

Carel Visser, escultor neerlandés nacido en 1928 en Papendrecht (Holanda). Visser estudió en la Universidad Técnica de Delft y en la Academia Real de Arte en La Haya. Creó inicialmente esculturas de hierro realistas -principalmente aves- y presentó su primera exposición individual en 1954 en la Galería Martinet de Ámsterdam. A partir de 1957, su estilo artístico se hizo más abstracto. 
Su trabajo posterior se caracteriza por el ensamblaje de materiales variados, tales como neumáticos, bidones de aceite, ventanas de coche, cuero, piel de oveja, huevos, etc. Sus obras desde el periodo 1975-1985 están adecuadas al ambiente de su ubicación, en contraste con las obra escultóricas iniciales, más expresionistas y realistas- como el caballo moribundo de 1949.

Camille Bernier, pintor francés nacido en 1823 en Colmar. 
Su pintura "Village Arberg" fue aceptada en la Exposición Universal de 1855, lo cual marcó el inicio de su carrera oficial. De ahí en adelante expuso prácticamente cada año uno o más cuadros en el Salón hasta 1892. Su obra recibió una buena acogida por parte de los críticos, que encontraron lo que se esperaba en un pintor de paisajes.
Fue conocido por su generosidad hacia sus amigos pintores a los que ayudó y acogió en su casa tanto en París como en Bretaña.
Murió en 1902.

On May 1 is the birthday of

Gregorio Prieto, Spanish painter born in 1897 in Valdepeñas.

Camille Bernier, French painter born in 1823 in Colmar.
