On January 10 is the birthday of

Eldzier Cortor, African-American artist and printmaker born in 1916. His work typically features elongated nude figures in intimate settings, influenced by both traditional African art and European surrealism.
Cortor attended the Art Institute of Chicago, gaining a degree in 1936. In 1940 he worked with the Works Progress Administration (WPA), where he drew scenes of Depression-era Bronzeville, a neighborhood on Chicago's South Side. In 1949, he studied in Jamaica, Cuba, and Haiti on a Guggenheim Fellowship, and taught at the Centre d'Art in Port-au-Prince from 1949 to 1951.
Growing up, he was an avid reader of the Chicago Defender, which was a popular newspaper that focused on celebrating the successes of African Americans. This is ultimately translated into the main thematic focus of his artwork, which is to portray African Americans in a positive light and highlight their beauty and achievements. For the majority of his career, Cortor played with different representations of the black female figure and how to represent her strength and beauty. Cortor saw the black female figure as being the essential spirit of the black race. His style is often described as experimenting with black physiognomy while infusing it with surrealism.
Cortor is considered to be the first African American artists to depict nude women as the central theme of his work. This was an unpopular choice for many artists at the time as a reaction to the dominant European and American cultural landscape at the time. This was also unfavored because of the historical legacy of the sexual exploitation of black women during slavery. Cortor refutes these notions by showing the nude black female body as a source of strength.
He died in 2015.

On January 11 is the birthday of

Manfredi Beninati, Italian artist born in Palermo (Sicily) in 1970. A contemporary figurative painter, his oeuvre also covers installations, drawings, sculpture and collage.
After dropping out of both law and film school and collaborating with well-known Italian directors, Manfredi Beninati began working as an artist, devoting himself to drawing. He spent some time in Spain and England and, in 2002, when came back to Italy, he began to make sculptures and figurative paintings that drew directly on real or (often) imaginary childhood memories. Beninati first started studying law then switched to film courses in the early 1990s while working as an assistant director in the Italian film industry. In 1994 he moved to London where he started working as a visual artist. In 2005 he was selected as one of four artists to represented his country at the 51 Venice Biennale where he received the audience award for the Italian pavilion. In 2006 he was given a fellowship at the American Academy in Rome as part of the Rome Prize. He currently lives and works in Palermo, Rome and Los Angeles where, together with his wife Milena Muzquiz (of Los Super Elegantes) he has founded an experimental theatre group. He is represented by James Cohan Gallery in New York, Tomio Koyama in Tokyo and Galleria Lorcan O'Neill in Rome.
Beninati is also a patron of Italian cultural heritage, organizing exhibitions, workshops, seminars and producing publications on Italian talents, through a foundation he and his mother set up in the memory of his younger brother Flavio. Recent projects he has curated include a series of talks on Italian design and a workshop on architecture icon Aldo Rossi held by American architect Thomas Tsang in Hong Kong and Palermo.

On January 12 is the birthday of

José de Ribera y Cuco, Spanish painter and printmaker born in 1591, better known as Jusepe de Ribera, who worked in Italy, mainly in Naples. He also was called Lo Spagnoletto ("the Little Spaniard") by his contemporaries and early writers because of his small stature an also because he originally claimed his origins by signing his works as "Jusepe de Ribera, Spanish".
He cultivate a naturalistic style that evolved from Tenebrism by Caravaggio towards a more colorful and luminous aesthetics, influenced by Van Dyck and other masters. It helped forge the great Neapolitan school (Giovanni Lanfranco, Massimo Stanzione, Luca Giordano ...), who recognized him as their undisputed master; and his works, sent to Spain at an early date, influenced art and iconographic models to local artists, including Velázquez and Murillo. His prints circulated through Europe and even Rembrandt knew it. A prolific author with commercial success, his fame had blossomed during the emergence of realism in the nineteenth century. He was an essential reference for Realists as Léon Bonnat. Some of his works were copied for centuries by painters as Fragonard, Manet, Henri Matisse, among others.
He died in 1652.

On January 13 is the birthday of

Paul Gavarni, nom de plume of Sulpice Guillaume Chevalier, French illustrator born in Paris in 1804.
Paul began work as a mechanical worker in a machine factory but he saw that to make any progress in his profession, he had to be able to draw; accordingly in his spare time in the evenings, he took classes in drawing. He devoted his special attention to architectural and mechanical drawing and worked at land surveying and mapping which led to his obtaining a position with the Government Ordnance Department as a draughtsman. It wasn't until his early thirties that he turned his attention to his proper vocation as an artist.
His first published drawings were for the magazine Journal des modes. His sharp and witty pencil gave to these generally commonplace and unartistic figures a life-likeness and an expression which soon won for him a name in fashionable circles. Gradually he gave greater attention to this more congenial work, and finally ceased working as an engineer to become the director of the journal Les Gens du monde.
His ambition rising in proportion to his success, Gavarni from this time followed the real bent of his inclination, and began a series of lithographed sketches, in which he portrayed the most striking characteristics, foibles and vices of the various classes of French society. The letterpress explanations attached to his drawings were always short, but were forcible and highly humorous, if sometimes trivial, and were admirably adapted to the particular subjects.
He died in 1866.

On January 14 is the birthday of

Henri Fantin-Latour, French painter and lithographer born in 1836, best known for his flower paintings and group portraits of Parisian artists and writers.
As a youth, he received drawing lessons from his father, who was an artist. In 1850 he entered the Ecole de Dessin, where he studied with Lecoq de Boisbaudran. After studying at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris from 1854, he devoted much time to copying the works of the old masters in the Musée du Louvre.Although Fantin-Latour befriended several of the young artists who would later be associated with Impressionism, including Whistler and Manet, Fantin's own work remained conservative in style.
Whistler brought attention to Fantin in England, where his still-lifes sold so well that they were "practically unknown in France during his lifetime". In addition to his realistic paintings, Fantin-Latour created imaginative lithographs inspired by the music of some of the great classical composers.
In 1875, Henri Fantin-Latour married a fellow painter, Victoria Dubourg, after which he spent his summers on the country estate of his wife's family at Buré, Orne in Lower Normandy, where he died in 1904.

On January 15 is the birthday of

(Friedrich August) Erich Schmidt-Kestner, German sculptor born in 1877 in Berlin.
He studied at the Berlin Academy of the Arts, and at the Academy of Art in Dusseldorf.
In 1904 he was awarded with a gold medal at the Great Berlin Art Exhibition. In 1905 he won a Gold medal at the International Art Exhibition in Munich for his work Schreitendes Mädchen. After completing his studies, he was awarded the Prix de Rome in 1905. So he had the opportunity to live two years in Italy to deepen their work. Until his 50 he lived in his hometown working as a freelance artist, only interrupted by the outbreak of the First World War in which he participated as a soldier in France, Russia and Italian translator on Alpenkorps. One of his studies at the Offenbacher Straße in Berlin-Friedenau, is still used as such.
He died in 1941.

On January 16 is the birthday of

Pierre Louis Rouillard, French sculptor born in París in 1820, known for his sculptures of animals. He was one of a "school of French animalières", which also included Pierre-Jules Mêne, Antoine-Louis Barye, Auguste Caïn and François Pompon. He worked mainly in cast iron rather than bronze.
Rouillard attended the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris, where he was a pupil of Jean-Pierre Cortot. He was a professor of sculpture at the École des Arts décoratifs from 1840 to 1881. François Pompon studied with him.
His works include sculptures for the Opéra de Paris, Palais du Louvre and the Fontaine Saint-Michel. He was commissioned to travel to Istanbul, by Sultan Abdulaziz. He has many sculptures in different locations of Istanbul, including a bull sculpture at the center of Istanbul's Kadikoy district. He was awarded the Ordre des Palmes Académiques and made a Chevalier of the Légion d'honneur.
He died in 1881.
