"Der Starnberger See / El lago Starnberg / Lake Starnberg"
Óleo sobre lienzo / oil on canvas, 40 × 50,2 cm., 1911

"Burro con saco de harina / Donkey with Sack of Flour", óleo sobre lienzo / oil on canvas, 120 x 97 cm., 1905
Staatliche Kunsthalle (Karlsruhe, Alemania / Germany). The Athenaeum

"Pareja de centauros en una cascada / Pair of Centaurs at a Waterfall"
Óleo sobre lienzo / oil on canvas, 61,5 x 50 cm., 1880
Bayerische Staatsgemäldesammlungen (Múnich, Alemania / Germany). The Athenaeum

"Desnudo reclinado / Reclining Nude", óleo sobre lienzo / oil on canvas, 61 x 72 cm., 1872-73
Gemäldegalerie Alte Meister - Staatliche Kunstsammlungen (Dresde, Alemania / Dresden, Germany)

watercolor, ink and gouache on paper, 43 x 50 cm., 1959

On February 2 is the birthday of

George Loring Brown, American landscape painter born in Boston in 1814.
He first studied wood engraving under Alonzo Hartwell and worked as an illustrator. He studied painting with Washington Allston, but soon went to Europe, residing principally in Italy for years. Brown spent much of his life abroad, and the motives of his pictures are usually Italian, and there is nothing specifically American about them either in treatment or sentiment. Among the best are "Sunset in Genoa" (1875), "Doges' Palace and Grand Canal," "Bay of Naples," "Niagara Falls in Moonlight." "The Bay of New York" (1869) was acquired by King Edward VII when visiting America as Prince of Wales.
He died in 1889.

On February 3 is the birthday of

Wilhelm Trübner, German realist painter of the circle of Wilhelm Leibl born in 1851 in Heidelberg.
He had early training as a goldsmith. In 1867 he met classicist painter Anselm Feuerbach who encouraged him to study painting, and he began studies in Karlsruhe under Fedor Dietz. The next year saw him studying at the Kunstacademie in Munich, where he was to be greatly impressed by an international exhibition of paintings by Leibl and Gustave Courbet. Courbet visited Munich in 1869, not only exhibiting his work but demonstrating his alla prima method of working quickly from nature in public performances. This had an immediate impact on many of the city's young artists, who found Courbet's approach an invigorating alternative to the shopworn academic tradition.
The early 1870s were a period of discovery for Trübner. He travelled to Italy, Holland and Belgium, and in Paris encountered the art of Manet, whose influence can be seen in the spontaneous yet restrained style of Trübner's portraits and landscapes. During this period he also made the acquaintance of Carl Schuch, Albert Lang and Hans Thoma, German painters who, like Trübner, greatly admired the unsentimental realism of Wilhelm Leibl. This group of artists came to be known as the "Leibl circle".
He published writings on art theory in 1892 and 1898, which express above all the idea that "beauty must lie in the painting itself, not in the subject". By urging the viewer to discover beauty in a painting's formal values, its colors, proportions, and surface, Trübner advanced a philosophy of "art for art's sake". In 1901 he joined the recently formed Berlin Secession, at the time Germany's most important forum for the exhibition of avant-garde art. From 1903 until his death in 1917 he was a professor at the Academy of Arts in Karlsruhe, also serving as director from 1904 to 1910.
Trübner's paintings are in many public collections, especially in Germany, including the Alte Nationalgalerie, Berlin, the Österreichische Galerie Belvedere, Vienna, and the Neue Pinakothek in Munich.
He died in 1917.

Today, February 4, is the birthday of

John Richard Passmore, abstract impressionist Australian artist born in 1904. Passmore trained in Australia before spending many years in England. He returned to Australia, where he taught. When he died he left his money to his family but his paintings to an acquaintance.
He was only thirteen when he left school and began working as a signwriter's assistant. Passmore studied at Julian Ashton's Art School, which is also known as the Sydney Art School. He travelled to England and studied at the Westminster School of Art, where he was taught by figurative painters Bernard Meninsky and Mark Gertler.
For many years Passmore lived in England. He sometimes stayed in a cottage in Suffolk. There he painted landscape compositions strongly influenced by Paul Cézanne.
Returning to Australia in 1951, Passmore taught art, first at his alma mater Julian Ashton School. He was the main teacher at this private school as the previous lead teacher Henry Gibbons retired. Then went on to teach at the Newcastle Technical College, and finally East Sydney Technical College. His paintings from the period stood between expressionism and abstraction.
Passmore had a heart attack in the early 1960s. He lived the last decades of his life painting, as a recluse, and his final weeks were in a home for the destitute near his birthplace.
He died in 1984.
