Norma Wallace Lifestyle

"Elasticum", collage y aguada / collage and gouache, 1920. AAL

"Príncipes de Malí / Princes of Mali", óleo sobre panel / oil on board, 68,5 x 121,5 cm., 1976. Robb Report

Self-portrait with his wife Marie Suzanne Giroust painting a portrait of Henrik Wilhelm Peill"
Óleo sobre lienzo / oil on canvas, 1767
Nationalmuseum (Escocolmo, Suecia / Stockholm, Sweden)

Vaya a Roslin".

On July 9 is the birthday of

Lino Selvatico, Italian painter born in 1872 in Padova.
His father, Riccardo (born 1849), was a lawyer, poet, comedic dramatist, and politician, who intended his son to become a lawyer and legislator. Lino's brother, Luigi Selvàtico (1873-1938), was also a painter. Luigi was nicknamed "Il gobbo Selvatico" (The Hunchbacked) due to his physical ailment. Lino was a pupil of Cesare Laurenti, and was also influenced by his friend Ettore Tito. He also was known for art criticism. He painted mainly landscapes in oil and acquaforte. He exhibited two portraits at the third Venice Biennale in 1899. In 1926, the Biennale had a posthumous exhibit of 45 of his works, and in 1935, sixteen of his works. His works are displayed in the Moderna Art Galleries of Milan, Rome, Trieste, Udine, and Venice. He completed portraits of Countess Annina Morosini (1908, Venice, Galleria d'arte moderna) and the actress Emma Gramatica (1911, Piacenza, Galleria d'arte moderna Ricci-Oddi).
His brother Luigi participated in the 1897 Biennale of Venice.
He died in 1924.

On July 10 is the birthday of

Bernard Buffet, French painter of Expressionism born in 1928, and a member of the anti-abstract art group L'homme Témoin (the Witness-Man).
He studied art there at the École Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-Arts (National School of the Fine Arts) and worked in the studio of the painter Eugène Narbonne. Among his classmates were Maurice Boitel and Louis Vuillermoz.
Sustained by the picture-dealer Maurice Garnier, Buffet produced religious pieces, landscapes, portraits and still-lifes. In 1946, he had his first painting shown, a self-portrait, at the Salon des Moins de Trente Ans at the Galerie Beaux-Arts. He had at least one major exhibition every year. Buffet illustrated "Les Chants de Maldoror" written by Comte de Lautréamont in 1952. In 1955, he was awarded the first prize by the magazine Connaissance des arts, which named the 10 best post-war artists. In 1958, at the age of 30, the first retrospective of his work was held at the Galerie Charpentier.
On 23 November 1973, the Bernard Buffet Museum was founded by Kiichiro Okano, in Surugadaira, Japan.
At the request of the French postal administration in 1978, he designed a stamp depicting the Institut et le Pont des Arts – on this occasion the Post Museum arranged a retrospective of his works.
Buffet created more than 8,000 paintings and many prints as well.
Buffet committed suicide at his home in Tourtour, southern France, on 4 October 1999. He was suffering from Parkinson's disease and was no longer able to work. Police said that Buffet died around 4 p.m after putting his head in a plastic bag attached around his neck with tape.

On July 11 is the birthday of

Edward Atkinson Hornel, Scottish painter of landscapes, flowers, and foliage, with children. He was born in Bacchus Marsh, Victoria, Australia, in 1864, and was a cousin of James Hornell.
He was brought up and lived practically all his life in Scotland after his family moved back to Kirkcudbright in 1866. He studied for three years at the art school at Edinburgh, and for two years at Antwerp under Professor Verlat. Returning from Antwerp in 1885, he met George Henry and associated himself with the Glasgow Boys.
Hornel and Henry collaborated upon The Druids Bringing in the Mistletoe (1890), a procession of druidic priests bringing in the sacred mistletoe, gorgeous with polychrome and gold. The two worked side by side to achieve decorative splendor of color, Hornel boldly and freely employing texture effects produced by loading and scraping, roughening, smoothing, and staining. In 1893–94 the two artists spent a year and a half in Japan, where Hornel learned much about decorative design and spacing. Towards the close of the nineties his colors, while preserving their glow and richness, became more refined and more atmospheric, and his drawing more naturalistic, combining sensuous appeal with emotional and poetic significance. In 1901 he declined election to the Royal Scottish Academy. A member of Glasgow Art Club, Hornel exhibited in the club's annual exhibitions.
In 1901 he acquired Broughton House, a townhouse and garden in Kirkcudbright, which was his main residence for the rest of his life with his sister Elizabeth. There he made several modifications to the house and designed garden taking inspiration from his travels in Japan. He also made an addition of a gallery for his paintings. On his death, in 1933, the house and library were donated for the benefit of the citizens and Broughton House is now administered by the National Trust for Scotland.
There are examples of his works in the museums of Aberdeen, Buffalo, Bradford, St. Louis, Toronto, Montreal, Glasgow, Edinburgh, Leeds, Manchester, Hull, Bath, and Liverpool.

On July 12 is the birthday of

Raoul Hausmann, Austrian artist and writer born in 1886. One of the key figures in Berlin Dada, his experimental photographic collages, sound poetry and institutional critiques would have a profound influence on the European Avant-Garde in the aftermath of World War I.
His earliest art training was from his father, a professional conservator and painter. After seeing Expressionist paintings in Herwarth Walden's gallery Der Sturm in 1912, Hausmann started to produce Expressionist prints in Erich Heckel's studio, and became a staff writer for Walden's magazine, also called Der Sturm, which provided a platform for his earliest polemical writings against the art establishment.
When Richard Huelsenbeck, a 24-year-old medical student who was a close friend of Hugo Ball and one of the founders of Dada, returned to Berlin in 1917, Hausmann was one of a group of young disaffected artists that began to form the nucleus of Berlin Dada around him. The photomontage became the technique most associated with Berlin Dada, used extensively by Hausmann, Höch, Heartfield, Baader and Grosz, and would prove a crucial influence on Kurt Schwitters, El Lissitsky and Russian Constructivism.
The most famous work by Hausmann, Mechanischer Kopf (Der Geist Unserer Zeit), "The Mechanical Head (The Spirit of Our Time)", c. 1920, is the only surviving assemblage that Hausmann produced around 1919–20.
Huelsenbeck finished his training to become a doctor in 1920 and started to practice medicine; by the end of the year he had published the Dada Almanach and The History of Dadaism, two historical records that implied that Dada was at an end. In the aftermath, Hausmann's friendship with Kurt Schwitters deepened, and Hausmann started to take steps toward International Modernism.
In the late 1920s, he re-invented himself as a fashionable society photographer. In later years, Hausmann exhibited his photographs widely, concentrating on nudes, landscapes and portraits. As Nazi persecution of avant-garde artists increased, he emigrated to Ibiza, where his photos concentrated on ethnographic motifs of pre-modern Ibizan life.
He died in Limoges in 1971.

On July 13 is the birthday of

Oleg Yurievich Lipchenko (Ukrainian: Олег Юрійович Липченко), Canadian artist and illustrator born in 1957 in Bogodukhov, Ukraine. He is a member of CANSCAIP.
He  moved to Toronto, Ontario in 1999. He studied Art at Art School in Poltava, Ukraine. He studied Art and Architecture at Poltava Technical University, gaining a Master of Architecture degree. Oleg Lipchenko currently lives in Toronto, Ontario.
He won the 2009 Elizabeth Mrazik-Cleaver Canadian Picture Book Award for his illustrations to the edition of Alice's Adventures in Wonderland, published by Studio Treasure and Tundra Books.
‘Where does Oleg Lipchenko’s strength as an artist lie?  It rests in his technical versatility, his complex vision, also in the seamless manner of weaving art history into his oeuvre plus in his ability to engage with a diverse palette of subjects. Memorable compositions, ironic historical references and his superb technical execution all add up to a rarely encountered, profoundly significant talent.’ Peter Alexander Por, sculptor, Articsok Gallery owner

On July 14 is the birthday of

Odinigwe Benedict Chukwukadibia Enwonwu, Nigerian painter and sculptor born in 1917. He is one of the pioneers whose career opened the way for the postcolonial proliferation and increased visibility of modern African art, and was the first Nigerian contemporary artist to win international acclaim. His work has been exhibited around the world. The Enwonwu crater on the planet Mercury is named in his honour.
His father, Omenka Odigwe Emeka Enwonwu, was a technician who worked with the Royal Niger Company; he was also a member of the Onitsha Council of Chiefs and a reputable traditional sculptor who created office stools and decorated doors with religious images. His mother, Ilom was a successful cloth merchant.
In 1934-37, Enwonwu studied Fine Arts under Kenneth C. Murray at Government Colleges, Ibadan and Umuahia. Murray was an education officer in charge of art education in the colonial civil service and later director of antiquities. Enwonwu attended Goldsmith College, London, in 1944, then continued his studies at Ruskin College, Oxford, England, from 1944 to 1946, at Ashmolean College and Slade School of Fine Arts, Oxford, 1946–48, graduating with first-class honours. During their time together, Enwonwu became Murray’s assistant and was recognized as one of the most gifted and technically proficient student of the “Murray Group”. In 1937, Murray exhibited Enwonwu’s work at the Zwemmer Gallery in London. The period of study under Murray marked the beginning of Enwonwu’s formal education in art. He took postgraduate courses in anthropology and ethnography at the University of California and Louisiana State University, Baton Rouge.
After working with Murray for many years, he was hired as a teacher at the Government College of Umuahia. According to Sylvester Ogbechie, author of Ben Enwonwu: The Making of an African Modernist, Murray was displeased with the university’s choice to provide Enwonwu with the same salary as the other seasoned teachers. This created a rift between mentor and mentee. Eventually Murray left Government College and Enwonwu replaced him as art teacher. He continued his work as an art teacher in other various schools.
He was art adviser to the Nigerian government from 1948. During the years following 1950, he toured and lectured in the United States, and executed many commissions as a freelance artist. From 1949 to 1954, Enwonwu held many art exhibitions within London, Lagos, Milan, New York City, Washington D.C., and Boston.
During his time, Enwonwu was well regarded as an artist; his art is described as a "unique form of African modernism". Ogbechie describes his art as "[the opening up of] third space in art history whose nature and parameters are at variance with art history's exclusionary narratives of modernity and its inscription of the modern artist-subject as a white, Western European male”.
He died in 1994.

Today, July 15, is the birthday of

Alexander Roslin, Swedish portrait painter born in 1718, who worked in Scania, Bayreuth, Paris, Italy, Warsaw and St. Petersburg, primarily for members of aristocratic families. He combined insightful psychological portrayal with a skillful representation of fabrics and jewels. In his choice of style and lustrous, shimmering colors Alexander Roslin exemplifies Rococo. He lived in France from 1752 until 1793, a period that spanned most of his career. Rococo artists opted for a more jocular, elegant and ornate style, characterized by lightness, elegance and graceful approach to art and architecture.
In Paris he was a protégé of François Boucher and his work rapidly became fashionable. He was chosen as a member of the French Art Academy, to which his wife also belonged. His early portraits are painted in bright, cool colours, and show the influence of Jean-Marc Nattier and Hyacinthe Rigaud. Around the 1760s he started using daring colouring in his paintings, such as in the portrait of his wife, Lady with Veil (1768), and the Jennings Family (1769).
Roslin had great technical skill in painting the surfaces and texture of precious materials such as fabrics and jewels, but was also adept at capturing his sitters at their best. In Paris he soon became one of the foremost portraitists of his time, valued mostly for practiced rendering of luxurious fabrics and gentle complexions: "Satin, skin? Go to Roslin." His portraits of members of the French aristocracy show sensitivity and taste and also psychological insight, although changes in taste might make his faces seem "stiff and lifeless" to some observers today.
He died in 1793.
